Cyanotype
Where Art and Science Meet
The Cyanotype process is one of the oldest alternative photographic technique in the history of photography. In 1842, John Herschel invented this process while experimenting with light-sensitive iron salts. Although Herschel was the inventor, the first prints were made by botanist Anna Atkins in 1843. Atkins made a photography book on ferns and various plants using this technique.
For about 150 years, architects and engineers used this same process to create blueprints of their designs. The term “blueprint” comes from the Prussian blue colour that is a cyanotype.
The process involves coating natural materials with a UV-light-sensitive solution of iron salts. Then, you cover them with plants, feathers, uniquely shaped objects, or images on acetate. After that, you expose them to the sun or a UV lamp to produce the image. Finally, you wash them with water to create stunning white and Prussian blue photos.
Cyanotypes will work well on anything made of natural fibre such as cotton, silk, canvas, wood, ceramics, and even glass.
Cyanotypes can also be bleached, toned, or altered to produce unique effects.
The cyanotype is a real collaboration with the natural elements: the sun, the water, the air, and the earth.

Conservation of Cyanotype Art
As with any photographic work of art, the cyanotype is fragile but resists time with care. This work of art continues being alive after it is created and responds to its environment (earth, water, air, light). Keep it away from direct sunlight, in a room without humidity.
Direct wall hanging without any protection should be avoided.
Framing Suggestions
It is always recommended to frame cyanotypes with a solid frame and matted. This helps to regenerate the print if it does fade slightly and stops the paper from being in direct contact with the glass which can cause issues if there is high humidity.
Using UV resistant glass will help to prevent some fading.
Cyanotype Textile
One-of-a-kind, handmade, and 100% Silk Scarves
Each one-of-a-kind, handmade, 100% silk is wearable art. They are inspired by nature's using the cyanotype technique. The vivid Prussian blue against the delicate silk creates a stunning visual symphony that captures the essence of grace and elegance.
Care Instructions
The image is permanent, but the blue colour will change to yellow if washed with phosphates, soda, borax or bleach. To preserve the original blue colour – hand wash using only a small amount of non-phosphate liquid soap. Use just water if possible. Rinse thoroughly, and dry flat in the shade. Blueprints can be ironed using a dry iron. Dry cleaning is not recommended.
